The six licenses work within copyright law and enables creators to pick and choose which rights they want to grant to others and which they want to reserve for themselves. For example, a creator can allow users to copy and redistribute their work, but reserve the right to make adapt their work and profit from it.\r\n\r\nThe CC licenses only pertain to the rights conferred by copyright law. They cannot restrict uses that are otherwise permitted under copyright. For example, a CC license cannot limit or restrict use of a work for critique or parody as allowed under Fair Use.\r\n<h1>How do CC licenses work with Copyright Law?<\/h1>\r\nThe Creative Commons works with lawyers from around the world to ensure the their licenses work within the laws a jurisdictions around the world. They are made up of three layers:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/legalcode\">legal code<\/a><\/strong> base of each license contains the \"lawyer-readable\" terms and conditions of the license that makes it legally enforceable.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The middle layer is the <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\"><strong>commons deed<\/strong><\/a> which summarizes the legal code in \"human-readable\" language. The deed, which is not legally enforceable, is designed to help users understand how they can use a work.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The top layer is <strong>metadata<\/strong> that summarizes the terms and conditions of the license in a \"machine-readable\" format that search engines and other technology can understand. This layer facilitates discovery of CC licensed works though Google Searches and other online tools.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nCC licenses last until the underlying copyright expires or a user violates their terms. If a user rectifies a violation within 30 of learning about it, the licenses will be reinstated.\r\n\r\nMost CC license violations are worked out between the licensor and licensee. Some countries don't allow creators to dedication works to the public domain, so CC0 has a \"fall back\" license that removes all restrictions. In the rare case that neither the CC0 tool nor the fall back are enforceable, it includes a promise by the licensor not to pursue copyright against those using the work in ways allowable in the public domain. CC0 has the same three-layer structure as the CC licenses.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"wp-image-116 alignleft\" style=\"font-size: 1em;\" src=\"https:\/\/openpress.wheatoncollege.edu\/wheatonoerguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/publicdomain-300x106.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"48\" \/>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/share-your-work\/public-domain\/pdm\/\"><strong>Public Domain Mark<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(aka PDM) can be used by anyone who has identified a work that is part of the public domain. PDM should only be for works that are in the public domain in all jurisdictions.\u00a0The tool works like a tag or label and is intended to make woks in the public domain identifiable and discoverable to users; it does not confer any rights.\r\n<h1>How do you give proper attribution to a CC licensed work?<\/h1>\r\nAll CC licenses require proper attribution. Additionally, it is considered best practice to give attribution when using works in the public domain. Additionally, it is considered best practice to give attribution when using works in the public domain.
